IFLA Russian Language Centre at the Russian State Library

Established in May 2007, the IFLA Russian Language Centre serves as a basis organization for the Russian speaking professional library community. The IFLA Russian Language Centre provides the Russian-speaking library professionals with an access to the wide range of foreign materials in the field of library and information science.

Background

1927 — Foundation of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions in Edinburgh at an international conference.
1971 — Registration in the Netherlands. The Royal Library, the national library of the Netherlands, in The Hague, generously provides the facilities for the headquarters.
1959 — USSR joins IFLA as the All-Union Library Council.
1997 (December 1) — the Russian State Library joins IFLA.
2007 (May) — the Russian State Library and IFLA sign an Agreement on Cooperation. RSL receives the status of the IFLA Russian Language Centre.

Key Activities of the IFLA Russian Language Centre

Among priority activities of the Centre are:

Active membership recruitment with the support of the national and other professional associations and CIS national libraries;
Organization of regional events under IFLA’s aegis;
Promotion of IFLA’s goals, principles and core values;
IFLA’s involvement in national and regional professional events in the Russian Federation and abroad;
Work on more effective communication within the Russian language community and with the IFLA bodies involved.

Cooperation

The Centre cooperates with the Library Assembly of Eurasia (LAE), Russian Library Association (RLA), National Library Association “Libraries of the Future” (NALF) and other non-governmental bodies in Russia and abroad.

IFLA Materials in the publications of the Russian State Library

Materials, translated by the IFLA Russian Centre, are published in the research-practical journals of the Russian State Library “Bibliotekovedenie” (“Library and Information Science”) and “News of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions”.
